Intertextuality

Intertextuality

Intertextuality is the shaping of a words meaning by another text. The term "Intertextuality" has, itself, been borrowed and transformed many times since it was coined by Julia Kristeva in 1966.  When it comes to music videos, Intertextuality can be reflected in the style of the music video or done in a humorous way like parody's. It helps audiences take further levels of meaning away from the text.

An example of cinematic referencing is Madonna's "Material Girl" (1985) which similarly imitates "Diamonds are a girls best friend"(1953). We can see just within the two images, that there is a clear similarity and comparison between the two. The style, colour scheme, dress and even posture is a reference to the other.

Music and Me

As a child I used to listen to a lot of pop and dance music. Even though they didn't mean anything to me that was the type of music I listened to. The first song I enjoyed of my child hood was "Mr Brightside" By the Killers. This was always a positive song I thought and would always put me in a good mood. This is how I began listening to rock and branching out of the genre to the music I listen to today.
Because I listened to a lot of different genres and types of music I had a large interest in dance music and followed the top 40 charts. I started listening to David Guetta when I first heard titanium from the top 40.
As I began listening to pop/rock music I really like scouting for girls and a range of there songs. I feel that "Elvis aint dead" was different as it kept to a high pacing and gave positive vibes. It wasn't very meaning full but as a child I only really listened to music that made me happy.
I currently listen to a wide range and mixture of music ranging from metal/rock to singer/songwriter. I don't know why i listen to such varied music but i usually like to try and listen to new music all the time and within recent years i have become very passionate about the music that i listen to and the effect that music has on my life, it is a key influence with what i do and what mood i am in.
